"The dangers of counterfeit medical products"..That's A Understatement

Counterfeit products are harmful and can even be fatal.

Fake medicines range from useless to highly dangerous. They often contain the wrong level of active ingredient – too little, too much or none at all – or an active ingredient intended for a different purpose. In some cases, fake medicines have been found to contain highly toxic substances such as rat poison. In all these scenarios, the person taking the counterfeit medicine is putting their health, even their life, at risk.

One can easily be deceived by counterfeit medicines: they are often packaged to a high standard with fake pills that look identical to the genuine ones. Sometimes a laboratory test is the only way to identify the difference.

The extent of the problem
Counterfeit medicine is now a truly global phenomenon, and all countries of the world are affected as source, transit or destination points.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that up to 1% of medicines available in the developed world are likely to be counterfeit. This figure rises to 10% globally, but in some areas of Asia, Africa and Latin America counterfeit goods can form up to 30% of the market.

Counterfeiting applies not only to 'lifestyle' medicines, including erectile dysfunction and weight loss medicines, but also to 'lifesaving medicines' including those used to treat cancer, heart disease and other serious illnesses.

And it's not just medicines. Fake medical devices also pose a risk. The term 'medical device' covers a wide range of healthcare products from contact lenses to condoms; syringes to surgical instruments; and wheelchairs to radiotherapy machines.

Risks of buying medicines over the Internet
More and more people are buying medicines and medical devices over the Internet, through online pharmacies and auction sites. Unfortunately, a large number of these Internet sites are unauthorized, unregulated and trade in illicit or sub-standard products.

If an online supplier conceals its physical address, this is a warning sign that their products could be dangerous. The WHO estimates that 50% of medicines available from such websites are counterfeit.

In particular, buying prescription-only medicines from unauthorized or dubious sources significantly increases the risk of getting sub-standard or fake products. It is important to consult a healthcare professional for prescription-only medicines and to obtain the medicines from a regulated source.

Buying medicines online may seem cheaper, quicker and more convenient than going through your doctor and high street pharmacy, but the dangers outweigh the benefits by far. Don't take the risk.

Twitter launches legal assault on tweet spammers
By Laurie Segall

8 Email PrintNEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Twitter is cracking down on spammers.

The company on Thursday filed a lawsuit in federal court in San Francisco against five of its most aggressive spam enablers.

PrintComment
The defendants include JL4 Web Solutions, based in the Philippines and referred to in the suit as "TweetAttacks." Other defendants include Tennessee-based Skootle Corporation, referred to as "TweetAdder"; "TweetBuddy"; and the individuals James Lucero and Garland Harris.

The lawsuit takes aim at the people building spamming tools, such as software that latches on to trending topics and starts injecting irrelevant marketing messages into the mix.

"With this suit, we're going straight to the source. By shutting down tool providers, we will prevent other spammers from having these services at their disposal," Twitter said in a blog post. "Further, we hope the suit acts as a deterrent to other spammers, demonstrating the strength of our commitment to keep them off Twitter."

By Friday afternoon, several of the websites named in Twitter's suit -- TweetAttacks, TweetBuddy, and a site operated by Lucero -- were offline. TweetAdder's site was still running, as were several of Harris' sites. The site operators could not immediately be reached for comment.

Twitter says it has spent around $700,000 in anti-spam efforts to combat the defendants' marketing blitzkrieg. It is seeking injunctions against each defendant as well as monetary damages.

Twitter is starting to take its spam problem -- a longtime annoyance -- more seriously. In January, the company acquired Internet security company Dasient, a deal aimed at bringing in new technology to fight off spammers.

Performics, a company that monitors its clients' brands on social platforms, says it sees significantly more spam on Twitter than on Google and Facebook.

"You have to eliminate all the irrelevant content to see what people are really saying," said spokesman Dan Malachowski. "On Twitter, a lot of it is irrelevant spam."

Twitter said on its blog that its engineers have recently launched new anti-spam measures "to more aggressively suspend a new type of @ mention spam." The company is also using its t.co link shortener as a defense: It tracks what's tweeted and tries to shut down links to malware or malicious content.

According to PeekYou, a search company that monitors Twitter's spam levels, the efforts are noticeable.

"Twitter has gotten a lot better over the last six months," CEO Michael Hussey said. "I think they're more quickly detecting and deleting lots of spam."

But it's still pretty far from perfect.

"You can go on eBay today and type 'twitter followers' or 'buy twitter followers,' and you can pump up your number," Hussey said. "Those are great examples of completely spam accounts."

All of the victims are black; the suspected shooter is white
(CNN) -- Three people were killed and two were injured Friday in four shootings in north Tulsa, Oklahoma and police are searching for a lone suspected gunman, they said.

Tulsa police spokesman Capt. Jonathan Brooks said investigators were looking into whether the shootings may have been possible hate crimes.

3 killed, 2 injured in Oklahoma shootings "We're not absolutely certain, but a hate crime is a possibility. And we'll go with where the investigation leads us," he said.

All of the victims are black. The suspected shooter is a white male and is believed to be traveling in a white truck, said Brooks.

It was not immediately clear whether any of the victims knew each other, he said.

They range in age from 31 to 54. They were shot over the course of seven hours at four different street locations in the early morning, Brooks said.

Tulsa police formed a joint task force with the local FBI office as well as the U.S. Marshals Service. In the event the shootings turn out to be hate crimes, "they can help us pursue it," he said.

"This is not your standard homicide," said Brooks.

Leader of Group of Dallas Residents Convicted of Intentionally Setting Fires to Collect American Red Cross Assistance Funds Is Sentenced to 240 Months

DALLAS — Following her guilty plea in May 2011 to one count of wire fraud and one count of arson, Marthella Broadus, 37, was sentenced this afternoon by U.S. District Judge Jane J. Boyle to 240 months in federal prison. In addition, Judge Boyle ordered Broadus to pay $1,729,115.95 in restitution. Marthella Broadus is the last of seven Dallas residents to be sentenced for her role in three arson fires committed in Dallas from December 2008 through May 2009. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Sarah R. SaldaƱa of the Northern District of Texas.

Early last year, Lashay Kelly, 25, Kenneth Hunter, 24, Kevin Hunter, 26, and Georgialyn Guice, 27, each pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of arson. Kelly was sentenced in November 2011 to 30 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $723,000 in restitution. Kenneth Hunter and Kevin Hunter were each sentenced in August 2011 to 27 months and 45 months in federal prison, respectively, and ordered to pay $968,000 in restitution. Guice was sentenced in November 2011 to 40 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $968,000.

Kenneth E. Smith, 27, who pleaded guilty last year to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, was sentenced in September 2011 to 37 months in prison and ordered to pay $37,000.

Marthella Broadus’ mother, Juanita Broadus, 62, pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud and was sentenced in October 2011 to 46 months in prison and ordered to pay $37,000 in restitution.

The 2900 Dilido Avenue Fire
According to the indictment, in late May 2009, Marthella Broadus and Lashay Kelly agreed to set fire to Kelly’s apartment located at 2900 Dilido Avenue in Dallas, in order to receive financial assistance from the American Red Cross. As part of their scheme, they removed household items and other valuables from the apartment. On May 31, 2009, Marthella Broadus intentionally started a fire inside Kelly’s apartment that caused approximately $700,000 in property damage.

Immediately after the fire, Kelly met with an American Red Cross case worker and falsely advised that seven household occupants were displaced from her apartment and that she lost all of her personal belongings in the fire. The Red Cross then issued a Client Assistance Card to Kelly, in the amount of $1885, to cover items lost such as food and clothes. Marthella Broadus and Kelly used this card to purchase approximately $300 in merchandise from a retailer in Dallas and to withdraw approximately $1520 in cash from an ATM.

The 4950 Wadsworth Drive Fire
According to the indictment, from late April though May 5, 2009, Marthella Broadus, Kenneth Hunter, Kevin Hunter and Georgialyn Guice agreed to set fire to Kenneth Hunter’s apartment located at 4950 Wadsworth Drive in Dallas, in order to receive financial assistance from the Red Cross. On May 3, 2009, Kevin Hunter removed household items and other valuables from Kenneth Hunter’s apartment. On May 3, 2009, Marthella Broadus intentionally started a fire inside Kenneth Hunter’s apartment, causing approximately $250,000 in property damage.

Immediately after the fire, Kenneth Hunter met with a Red Cross case worker and falsely stated that eight household occupants were displaced from his apartment and that he lost of all of his personal belongings in the fire. The Red Cross issued a Client Assistance Card, in the amount of $2015 to Kenneth Hunter. That same day, Marthella Broadus, Kenneth Hunter, Kevin Hunter and Georgialyn Guice used the card to withdraw approximately $2000 from an ATM in Dallas.

The 7925 Racine Drive Fire
According to the indictment, in December 2008, Marthella Broadus, Juanita L. Broadus and Kenneth E. Smith, agreed to set fire to Marthella Broadus’s rental house at 7925 Racine Drive in Dallas, to receive financial assistance from the Red Cross. On December 8, 2008, Marthella and Juanita Broadus, along with Kenneth E. Smith, removed household items and other valuable items from Marthella Broadus’s house. On December 9, 2008, Marthella Broadus intentionally started a fire inside her house, causing more than $16,000 in property damage. Marthella Broadus then met with a Red Cross caseworker and falsely stated that 17 household occupants were displaced from her house and that she lost all of her belongings in the fire. The Red Cross issued a Client Assistance Card worth $1745 to Marthella Broadus to cover items lost in the fire. Between December 10 and December 13, 2008, Marthella Broadus, Juanita L. Broadus and Kenneth E. Smith made approximately $1740 worth of purchases and withdrawals using this card.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Dallas Fire–Rescue Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Brown prosecuted.

Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout handed 25-year federal sentence

By the CNN Wire Staff

The life of Viktor Bout is considered to have inspired the 2005 Nicolas Cage movie “Lord of War.”

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
■NEW: Viktor Bout is sentenced to 25 years in prison
■Bout was convicted last year on four counts stemming from weapons deals
■His lawyer wanted the conviction overturned and said the prosecution was ‘political’

(CNN) — Convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout was sentenced Thursday to 25 years behind bars by a federal judge in New York.

“I am not guilty,” Bout said through a translator. “I never intended to kill anyone. I never intended to sell any arms to anyone. God knows this is the truth.”

Last year Bout, who was dubbed “the merchant of death” by his accusers, was convicted on four counts of conspiracy to kill Americans, acquire and export anti-aircraft missiles and provide material support to a terrorist organization.

He had faced the possibility of life in prison.

At the trial, the prosecution said that during a 2008 sting operation by U.S. drug enforcement agents in Thailand, Bout believed he was selling weapons to Colombian guerrillas.

Bout guilty conspiring to kill Americans

Viktor Bout atty: ‘We intend to appeal’

His lawyer, Albert Dayan, filed a letter last week asking Judge Shira A. Scheindlin, who presided over the trial and who set Bout’s sentence, to set aside the guilty verdict.

Dayan urged the judge not to “become an unwilling party” in what he called a “wrongful prosecution” for “purely political reasons.” He argued that the conviction is a “product of malice” and that Bout has been an “object of private politics” coming from Washington.

The lawyer claimed that Bout was picked out by the United States government and lured into a crime manufactured by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, in which the agency played “the role of judge, jury and executioner. “

In his claim, Dayan insisted that Bout did not intend to sell any arms to the agents, that he had not sold any arms for several years and that the only thing he wanted to sell were two cargo airplanes, worth $5 million. Dayan stood by the claim that DEA officers baited his client into illegal activities.

“I do not profess, I do not argue that he’s an angel but he is innocent of these charges,” wrote Dayan. “I felt it was my duty to speak out and let the world know.”

According to the indictment, Bout was suspected of creating front companies that used his planes to deliver food and medical supplies, as well as arms.

After a sting operation in 2008 he was arrested in Thailand and in 2010 was extradited to the United States following a protracted court proceeding.

He was convicted in November after a three-week trial in New York.

Prior to his arrest, the DEA had struggled to draw Bout out of his Russian homeland, which is long thought to have sheltered and defended him.

Undercover agents met with Bout’s associates the world over, from Curacao to Copenhagen, in an attempt to set up a meeting with their target, according to the indictment.

The Russian businessman also has been accused of assembling a fleet of cargo planes to traffic military-grade weapons to conflict zones around the world since the 1990s.

Allegations of trafficking activities in Liberia prompted U.S. authorities to freeze his American assets in 2004 and prohibited U.S. transactions with him, according to the federal indictment.

Bout has maintained that he operated legitimate businesses and had acted as a mere logistics provider. His exact age is unclear, but he is believed to be in his late 40s or 50s, with his age in dispute due to different passports and documents.

The U.S. attorney’s office said it had no confirmed age.

Critics have accused Bout of providing arms to rebels in several countries and fueling bloody conflicts in places such as Liberia and Sierra Leone.

In 2000, then-British Foreign Office Peter Hain branded him “Africa’s chief merchant of death” at a time when Bout is believed to have supplied arms to officials in Sierra Leone, a former British colony then embroiled in civil war.

Looks Like "Political Studies"is Un-Healthy

A 54-year-old educator found dead in a midtown New York hotel room with blood coming out of his mouth was a dynamic and, at times, controversial figure in French academia.

There was "no evidence of a struggle" and no obvious trauma to Richard Descoings' body, New York police Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said Wednesday.

"We are awaiting the medical examiner's determination as to cause of death," Browne said.

Security personnel at the Michelangelo Hotel found Descoings dead in his bed Tuesday afternoon after he didn't check out of the hotel. He had blood coming out of his mouth, the city fire department said.

Descoings was the director of the Institute of Political Studies in Paris, a prestigious French school -- known popularly as Sciences Po -- that has groomed many prominent officials in government and business in France. He was also a member of the French Council of State, a top government advisory body.

In a statement, President Nicolas Sarkozy of France expressed his condolences to Descoings' family, paying tribute to "the exceptional career of a great servant of the state, who devoted his whole life to his chosen cause of education without distraction."

During his 16 years in charge of Sciences Po, Descoings sought to bring more diversity to the illustrious institution, which is part of the elite group of French higher education establishments known as the "grandes ecoles."

He presided over a large increase in the number of international students attending the school, setting up alliances with leading institutions around the world, like Columbia University and the London School of Economics.

In 2001, Descoings introduced a program to promote the recruitment of students from disadvantaged neighborhoods. The approach was applauded by educational reformers but some commentators said it devalued the school's famously demanding entry requirements.

"France has today lost an eminent representative of the French school of political science -- somebody who worked tirelessly for our country's educational influence in the world," French foreign minister Alain Juppe said in a statement.

Descoings' wife, Nadia Marik, is in charge of strategy and development at Sciences Po.

Descoings was in New York with about 40 other heads of leading universities from around the world to attend the Global Colloquium, an annual event hosted this year by Columbia.

Ban Ki-moon, the secretary general of the United Nations, addressed the university heads Monday and dined with them, said Martin Nesirky, a U.N. spokesman. He said he believed Descoings was at the event.

The death of Descoings is the second dramatic event involving a high profile figure associated with Sciences Po that the New York police have had to investigate in the past year.

In May, they arrested Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former managing director of the International Monetary Fund, on allegations that he sexually assaulted a maid in his hotel room.

All criminal charges against Strauss-Kahn, a former French finance minister who has taught economics classes at Sciences Po, were dismissed in August.

The accusations, which Strauss-Kahn denied, torpedoed his chances of running in the French presidential election this year.

Strauss-Kahn is under investigation in France over accusations of "aggravated pimping" after it was alleged he participated in a prostitution ring. He has pushed back against the accusations, saying he did not know young women at parties he attended were being paid for sex
